										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Your price is too high.”<br>“We don’t have budget.”<br>“Let’s revisit next quarter.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most of the time, this isn’t a real budget problem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s a <strong>permission problem</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because inside their company, someone is going to ask the buyer the one question your sales call didn’t answer clearly enough:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>“So… why are we spending money on this?”</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If they can’t explain it in plain numbers and plain logic, they’ll call it “budget” and move on.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What “No Budget” Usually Means (In Real Life)</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It usually means one of these:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>The cost is clear, but the payoff isn’t.</strong></li>



<li><strong>They want it, but they can’t justify it internally.</strong></li>



<li><strong>The risk feels higher than the reward.</strong></li>



<li><strong>They don’t know what happens if they do nothing.</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So budget becomes the safest exit line.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not because they’re lying — because they’re stuck.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Missing Piece: A Real Business Case</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A business case isn’t a spreadsheet flex.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s a simple story that procurement, finance, or a Finance Director can repeat without you in the room:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>What problem are we solving?</strong> (in their world, not yours)</li>



<li><strong>What does it cost us today?</strong> (time, missed revenue, churn, operational drag)</li>



<li><strong>What changes if we fix it?</strong> (measurable outcome)</li>



<li><strong>What will it cost and how fast do we get payback?</strong> (in GBP, with assumptions)</li>



<li><strong>What’s the risk of doing nothing?</strong> (the bit most sellers avoid)</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you don’t give them this, they’ll have to invent it.<br>And they won’t.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The “UK Reality” That Makes This Worse</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the UK, you’ll often hit at least one of these gates:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>a manager who likes the idea</li>



<li>procurement who wants structure</li>



<li>finance who wants justification</li>



<li>leadership who wants risk reduced</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And none of them care that your product is “nice”.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They care if it’s <strong>reasonable</strong> and <strong>defensible</strong>.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How to Handle “No Budget” Without Sounding Pushy</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you hear “no budget”, don’t argue.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re not there to “overcome” it — you’re there to find out if the business case is missing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Try something like:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>“Is it actually a budget issue, or is it that the outcome isn’t clear enough to justify?”</strong></li>



<li><strong>“Who needs to sign off on spend like this in your business?”</strong></li>



<li><strong>“What would you need to show internally for this to be approved?”</strong></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those questions don’t feel salesy.<br>They feel like you understand how companies work.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Quick Self-Check</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re getting “budget” a lot, ask yourself:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Have I clearly tied this to a <strong>cost of doing nothing</strong>?</li>



<li>Can the buyer explain the value in <strong>one sentence</strong> without me?</li>



<li>Have I shown a simple <strong>payback</strong> or <strong>ROI logic</strong>, even rough?</li>



<li>Do I know who the real <strong>approver</strong> is?</li>



<li>Did I give them a <strong>business case</strong> they can forward internally?</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the answer is “not really”, then budget isn’t the issue.<br>The <em>case</em> is.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What To Do Next</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you write “just checking in,” you already know it’s weak.<br>You’re sending it because you <em>feel</em> like you should follow up — not because you actually have something to say.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And buyers feel that immediately.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What “Just Checking In” Really Means</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To the sender, it usually means:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><em>“I don’t want this to die.”</em></li>



<li><em>“Maybe they forgot.”</em></li>



<li><em>“I don’t know what else to write.”</em></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To the buyer, it reads as:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><em>“Nothing has changed.”</em></li>



<li><em>“You’re waiting on me to do the work.”</em></li>



<li><em>“This can stay unanswered.”</em></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No one opens a follow-up hoping to be asked if they’ve “had a chance.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why It Doesn’t Work</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People don’t ignore follow-ups because they’re busy or rude.<br>They ignore them because the message gives them no reason to engage.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Just checking in” doesn’t:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>add context</li>



<li>introduce anything new</li>



<li>move the conversation forward</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It simply re-surfaces the same decision they already chose not to make.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At that point, silence <em>is</em> the answer.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">This Is Why It’s an Anti-Pattern</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An anti-pattern feels productive, but quietly works against you.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Just checking in” feels safe.<br>Polite.<br>Low-risk.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But it does three things you don’t want:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>It puts the pressure on the buyer to justify themselves</li>



<li>It highlights that you’re waiting, not leading</li>



<li>It lowers the perceived value of the conversation</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re not reopening the door — you’re knocking again without a reason.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What a Real Follow-Up Looks Like</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A good follow-up doesn’t remind.<br>It changes the situation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That means bringing something new into the conversation:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>a relevant observation</li>



<li>a clearer angle</li>



<li>a sharper problem framing</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Just checking in to see if you had a chance to look at my last message.”</p>
</blockquote>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Try something closer to:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“You mentioned uneven deal quality last quarter. That usually shows up when qualification breaks at the top of the funnel. If that’s still relevant, I can share what typically fixes it.”</p>
</blockquote>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now you’re not waiting.<br>You’re contributing.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Shift Most People Miss</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Follow-ups aren’t about persistence.<br>They’re about progress.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If nothing has changed since your last message, sending another one won’t help.<br>It just makes the lack of movement more obvious.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes the most professional follow-up is waiting until you actually have a reason to reappear.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Simple Gut Check</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before you send a follow-up, ask yourself:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>“Does this email give them something new to react to — or am I just hoping timing will save me?”</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If it’s the second one, don’t send it.</p>

<li>Starting with &#8220;I hope this finds you well&#8221;</li>



<li>Multiple exclamation points</li>



<li>Over-explaining why you&#8217;re reaching out</li>



<li>Ending with &#8220;I would really appreciate 5 minutes of your time&#8221;</li>
